Kdenlive (pronounced Kay-den-live) is a Non Linear Video Editing Suite for KDE. It is released under the GNU Public License.
Kdenlive uses Piave as it's video rendering engine to display and manipulate video clips. We have now reached our first milestone release. The current version of kdenlive/piave features :
- DV quality editing
- Resize, move, and cut an unlimited number of clips of any length
- Unlimted number of tracks for editing
- Dual video monitors, both capable of playback.
- Drag-n-Drop compatability with external programs, such as konqueror and noatun
- Can read raw DV and AVI DV files.
- French translation
The future design aims for Kdenlive include :
- Professional quality non-linear video/audio editing
- Fade, Alpha transparency, Chroma key, speedup, slowdown and other standard effects.
- Hardware acceleration support
- Support for GIMP plugins and EffecTV effects, amongst others
- Batch rendering, network rendering, background rendering
- Support for extra video formats (currently, Kdenlive supports Raw DV and AVI files that use the DV codec), multiple audio formats, and various picture formats
- Built in movie capture
- Built in or standalone project/asset management system.
Kdenlive is being developed as a suite of several seperate programs, to aid in the reuse of resources and to allow the program to be spread across multiple computers. The following programs have so far been defined
- The editor, (named Kdenlive), allowing the user to create an editing project in a user friendly environment.
- A Rendering program, (Piave, by Rolf Dubitzky) takes the Scenelist generated by the editor and renders it. Also in charge of playback within the editor, but can be used standalone.
- A cutting scheduler, (still to be written) which will keep the project being edited up to date as much as is possible without hindering the user from editing. It will also be capable of scheduling cutting at various times, and for multiple projects, allowing, for instance, batch rendering overnight.
By breaking the system into seperate programs, it will be relatively easy to port to different environments, and to make it compatable with new hardware.
