The People of GTV
Who were they, and where are they now?
GTV, or Guild Television. Based at the Guild of Students at the University of Birmingham.
This is a tribute to all of the people who have made GTV, past and present, what it is. People are listed by the year that they left GTV - in many cases several years after they graduated! Click on the pictures to see them fullsize.
This is very much a "Work in Progress" - I haven't had time yet to write paragraphs about everyone I know/knew, so if your hasn't been written yet it doesn't mean that I don't like you! Oh, but if you don't know who I am, then it probably means I know that you was part of GTV but have no clue as to who you are or what you did.
It is likely that there are some errors on this page, in particular with reconstructing exactly when people were active members of GTV. I am trying to make it as accurate as possible, so if you sees something on here which is not correct, let me know. For a lot of people I have had to guess the year in which they left GTV, based on who told me about them, or by the year that they were on the comittee.
Along with accuracy, I want this page to be as complete as possible, so if anyone has _any_ details about any of the people on here, including ways to contact them and what they did, or if there is anyone who I have missed off this list, or if you want to write a paragraph about how great they (or you!) were, then don't hesitate to contact me and let me know!
Thanks (so far) go to Rob Brewer, for providing huge amounts of info on people who were involved in GTV between about 1992 and 1997, and for outlining the history of how GTV came to be in the basement of the guild, also to (in no particular order) Alexandra Taylor, Kerry Murdock, Phil Hayes, Toby Harris, Monica Coyne, Chas Castell, Robert Longstaff, Peter Coleman and Gordon Kirkpatrick for imparting on me their knowledge, wisdom, ideas, and nostalgia.
Someone mentioned to me that several pictures on this page are a bit dark. Trouble is that they are taken off a digital camcorder, and so what you see is all there is. I might photoshop 'em if I get time, but at the moment that is woefully lacking.
Note that contact details will only be added directly to this website after recieving permission to do so, though I will redirect people to your homepage if your details are there.
01/02/2003 - Update
Updated with everything that people have sent me in the last couple of months. Cheers people, keep it up!
05/06/2002 - Update
After being in touch with Phil Hayes, I have discovered that at around about the same time two weeks ago when I started this project, totally coincidentally, seperately and freakily, Phil and Simon Hargreaves were discussing a very much related idea, which has started up as www.gtvreunited.com. You may want to check it out as well, though there are definite considerations that both projects will merge into one single community website. Stay tuned...
History of GTV
GTV was founded in 1968 in the Medical School. After years of wandering it got studios on the first floor of the Guild in about the late 1970s (directly above the current premises). The move to the basement "media centre" was made in the summer of 1997. The new studio was specified and designed by Dave Wild; Building Services gave us walls, power and lighting bars; Anna Reid and Rob Brewer put it together with help from Gordon Kirkpatrck as and when he was available and occasionally other people.
Founding Members?
The following people were found on the "GTV - The Early years" souvenier tape from the 1992/3 reunion party. I believe that they are founding members, but have not yet confirmed this.

(written by himself)
GTV from 1982-1986, Tech Director in 1985/6. I was one of the
engineering staff that was involved in commissioning the EMI 2001
cameras to actually work in colour (these having been procured the year
before). I was also involved in the installation of the ProWest vision
mixer obtained from Central TV on Broad Street which invovled a mass
effort in multi-core cable wiring just before the NASTA conference of
1984 (I think). Also during my time, we produced two programmes for
external customers namely, IPC Magazines (Learn to Read?) and a Fishing
Video for a guy from Central (Grahma Thompson) which starred Terry
Thomas. Other notable memories were setting up the Deb Hall for a
production written by Tim Crow for the NASTA Conference and also filming
a GTG production of Equus. Also held up by head of undergraduate studies
in Elec Eng as a living example of the perils of Student TV in damaging
degree prospects! :)

Ellis Birt
(written by himself, slightly modified)
GTV from 1988-1991, I was an Engineer in GTV and was very heavilly invloved
with the Rewire that took place in 1990-91. I also rebuilt the EMI2001 that was
known as Camera 4. It was also at this time that the Sony DXC M3 was
bought to replace a Hitachi that was stolen, followed by the first SVHS
kit. I also worked on Dr Who "Sacrifice", the James Bond Spoof
(Production Designer), and the adventures of Clent the Mouse including
the crash edit for the open section of the NASTA 1989 conference - we
lost by a technical decision (The tape was still in the UMatic recorder
as it was wheeled into the council chamber just time to be used for
the competition - some said that we had cheated, quite fair considering
the entry was decided on over drinks in the bar the night before) UEA
Neus TV took a copy to show on their network though.
I dropped out (In debt) in August 1991. Got a proper job as a computer
programmer in 1993.

Geoff Maskell
Station Manager, or Executive Producer as the title was then, in 1991-92. Geoff was instrumental
behind the scenes in modernising GTV's equipment, as we moved away from old Umatic recorders to S-VHS
decks. Geoff's passion was for journalism and he presented several of the Sabbatical Election Shows.
It was a source of great amusment when his photo appeared in the prospectus (and on the University's
website).

Rachel Taylor, Robin Hudson, Tom Taylor
Rachel Taylor is Alexandra Taylor's sister, Robin Hudson was Rachel's boyfriend at the time,
and Tom Taylor is Rachel and Alexandra's dad. They were all involved in the filming of several
Tiverton Road episodes.
Alex writes :
Basically, the 'Live Dead' episodes were filmed at my parents' house in
Wales. My sister and her boyfriend were roped in as 'zombies' and my dad as
a 'strange man' (type cast). If you look closely at the zombies you can see
their hysterical giggling. Probably a side effect of being raised from the
dead. Although my mum doesn't appear on screen, huge thanks should be given
for looking after the rather large cast/crew, and for fetching the horses
back from the village when we left the field gate open!

Junaid Abbas
(written by himself)
Station Manager/Exec Producer 1997-1998 In the four years i practically
lived in GTV I spent a lot of time pissing off a lot of people with my immature
attitude, love of incredibly vulgar comedy (especially Bill Hicks), collosal
ego/arrogance and my talent for believing in my own talent (despite
plenty of evidence suggesting its non-existence). Produced & presented
GTV's original music show - "Twist n Shout" - which always featured
incredibly lame attempts at comedy sketches. Also Produced & presented
several Sabb Election Specials, and the first to do joint GTV & Burn
FM broadcasts. Cajoled by the legendary Phil Hayes into starring as
the original (and best) El Presidente. When the crappy old TV's
throughout the Guild were replaced, personally put up half-a-dozen
shiny new ones myself one rainy Sunday afternoon/evening. (The techies
refused to help cos it wasn't part of their job!) Last, but certainly
not least, was in charge of GTV during our hosting of NaSTA 98. After
leaving GTV became a trainee-journalist with BBC Radio WM, worked on
some crappy game shows & home improvement nonsense for BBC2 & ITV
(before it became ITV1), was a Graphic Designer and also spent some
time writing the scripts for Children's ITV.

Ellie Tinto
Joint station manager with Laura Jackson, I (Jason Wood) will always remember Ellie as the
one who had the most rotten luck in the world when it came to technology, often through no fault
of her own. For instance, the time when we recorded the Changing Rooms thing for two or three hours
at Pricewater house Coopers only to come back and find there was no sound... Well who could have
expected a bloody great big resistor to be in that little bodge, eh Mike? And how about the
documentary that she made for her course and Nasta, which she had to re-edit three or four times
because people who knew nothing about the 2 gig file limit on Windows kept moving her project
around... Doh, eh? (a bit gutted you talk all about my hopeless technical failures and nothing about
my charismatic leadership and social drinking skills!!! - Ellie) Sometime in her second year, Ellie
was making a dating show called Brum Love - I can't remember if she ever finished an episode though.
She might of been making it in her first year but I wasn't around then.

Chaz Castell
He's tall, he can talk, he's got charisma by the bucketloads, he was in a local band called
the Soul Penguins who played down GTV once in my first year, but Chas didn't really get involved
in GTV until some time afterwards. The first thing I recall him doing was a Burn TV, where he played
guitar, and sang, and talked, and... was tall, and talked and it was really good. Sometime, I'm not
sure when, it was just before one of the holidays, we started throwing around the idea of doing a
big show, and then one thing led to another and we made Later With GTV, which won best
title sequence at Nasta 2002. Chas really knew how to use alliteration and write scripts, and
talk, and be tall, and give pep talks, and be a presenter, and... be tall, and... did I mention
he could talk?

The first time I got to know Nick was the very first GTV social I went to - which ended with us
both missing the bus, Nick losing his wallet, bus pass and having to get his mom to pick us up (for
which I'm very greatful - I wasn't in the mood for walking the five miles to West Brom - not that
night at any rate!) Was joint special projects with Gemma in his second year, and they spent all
year filming for this big project for the Sports centre... who then decided that they only wanted
a smaller 5 minute version and didn't pay up for the full project.

"Random Bill" as I believe he was nicknamed by some, Bill always wanted to make his
own movie. Starting out in Fishtank (I think), he then joined GTV, then went to fish tank,

haven't seen anything of him recently.

Jason "Tigger" Wood
(written by himself)
Ahh. This would be me. Should I be self-flattering, egotistical, vain, elitist and arrogant? Course
I should :-) Chas and I Co-produced and co presented Later with GTV, including the Title Sequence
which won Best Title Sequence at Nasta 2002, and in a fit of madness, I created Ultimate
Attention Grabber Ident, which got highly commended for comedy, also at Nasta 2002. In
other spates of editing, I made a morphing ident or two between the faces of people at the station
(of which several of the pictures used are on this page), I wrote the software used for the Sabbatical
Elections called SabbGraph, two years running (again, I wrote it twice - the lesson of "back things
up" was one hard learned in my case), and in my spare time now I am working on Kdenlive, a free,
Profesional Quality non-linear video editor, licensed under the GPL. Sourcecode and details of
both SabbGraph and Kdenlive can be found on the links to the left. After Later with GTV,
people realised that I could actually play keyboard and organ and thus started making use
of me...

John "Spanners" Main
John has been described by a number of people as being "a bit random". His first contribution to GTV was on Beth and Amy's show, where he impersonated a station manager. He later went on to become joint station manager with Nadine, running GTV with all of the charm, talent and sheer quality that you would expect from a tall random techie bloke with a goatie. (remarkably well, in other words). When not at the helm of command, John could be found sitting in the engineering cupboard playing with bits of wire, or saying "oh well, it was goosed anyway" after frying seven hundred quids worth of camera... Let's not forget his artistic side, as he would take a (different) broken camera, stick it to a piece of wood in weird shapes before covering it in crayola paint. In his more rational moments, John would take on the charge of directing, and has been known to get quite comically stressed out whilst things go tits up.
John and I made a number of idents together. John made a music video using scenes from
the matrix, which alas did not survive a harddrive crash. He made a drama for Nasta in 2001,
and produced several Gallery Chat's, where a show was produced by... the gallery crew! He
produced Guild@home, which got highly commended for Video to Music at Nasta 2002

I first saw Ian around in the first year, talking to Toby. Then he decided not to get involved
until his final year. For a time, he was the major provider of technology for Fishtank, till he
decided that he was going to join GTV again instead. Ian's self-proclaimed mission in life is to know
every bar-woman wherever he happens to be, and seems to spend way too much time in Joe's.
